The Blanco County Rotary Club, in partnership with the Blanco Library, has been conducting a reading program for K–3 grades each Monday for the past several weeks. The objective of the program is to reduce the “Summer Slump,” i.e. the difference in reading and comprehension levels that seems to occur in young students over the summer vacation. Over 20 kids have attended each session where they read books or are read to by one of the 12 Rotary “tutors.” After a reading period, they are introduced to educational games for a 30-minute period. All the youngsters gather in the library’s large conference room the last half hour of the program for storytelling and sing-alongs led by the tutors. The feedback from both parents and students has been very positive. The Rotary and Library hope that the program has better prepared the young students
to succeed in the upcoming school year.
